The Dream and the Island: MLK Jr.’s Time on Martha’s Vineyard

The Dream and the Island: MLK Jr.’s Time on Martha’s Vineyard

Join us on Sunday, January 19th for a talk with Elaine Weintraub, Co-Founder of the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard, and colleague Christie Vanderhoop, known for her work with Mariposa Museum in Oak Bluffs, as they explore Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s relationship with Martha’s Vineyard and examines what his vibrant legacy means to each of us. Martin Luther King’s impact on the world stage was immense. His rhetoric and determination to resist injustice without violence inspired movements in Northern Ireland, the Dalit community in India, and numerous post-colonial freedom struggles in Africa.
Dr. King’s story on Martha’s Vineyard, his place of rest, recreation, and solace, plays a vital role in understanding his life. Traces of his time here remain in the recollections of those who knew him and in the letters he wrote. This talk will uncover how this Island provided a unique connection to his remarkable journey and enduring influence.

MVM Members: $15; Non-Members: $25.
