Sequan: Cultural Perpetuity With More Than Human Relations

Sequan: Cultural Perpetuity With More Than Human Relations

Join us on Saturday, April 26, for a powerful conversation with Brad Lopes (Aquinnah Wampanoag) and Taylor Smalley (Herring Pond Wampanoag) as they explore the deep, historic relationships between Wampanoag communities and their more-than-human relatives—such as herring, eel, whales, sturgeon, and seals—and the enduring importance of time and seasonality in the Dawnland.

Late March through early May marks a sacred and significant period for many Indigenous peoples across the Northeast, signaling spring’s emergence from winter, the start of a new year, and the migration of many vital species. These seasonal shifts are intimately tied to Wampanoag cultural knowledge and lifeways, reflecting a continued practice of cultural perpetuity, preservation, and resistance.

This discussion invites all of us to reflect on our own relationships with time and the natural world—and to imagine a shared future shaped by deeper understanding and reciprocity with the more-than-human world around us.
