Salt Spray on the Rails [ONLINE ONLY]

Salt Spray on the Rails [ONLINE ONLY]

Join us on Tuesday, May 13th for a live, online only reprise of a talk first given in March 2024. If you missed it then, or want to hear it again, now’s your chance!
Once there was a railroad on Martha’s Vineyard. It was built on dreams and sand, and it linked the steamer wharf in Oak Bluffs to a resort development on the shores of Katama Bay. A locomotive, two coaches, and a baggage car shuttled along its nine miles of narrow-gauge track, for 24 summers: 1872 to 1895. It shouldn’t have worked at all, and yet somehow it did, becoming a beloved part of the Island’s original summer-resort boom. MVM Research Librarian Bow Van Riper shares an inside look at the Island’s own “little engine that could.”
