Redcoats and Resilience: Vineyard Women in the Revolution

Redcoats and Resilience: Vineyard Women in the Revolution

The American Revolution was fought on more than just battlefields, and resistance to British rule was not limited to men. Women on Martha’s Vineyard played a vital role in defying British control—through symbolic acts of protest, intelligence gathering, and, according to legend, direct confrontation with invading Redcoats.

Their family and business connections placed them at the center of colonial resistance networks, and in one remarkable case—long thought to be mere legend—they carried out a daring act of sabotage under the cover of darkness.

Join Research Librarian Bow Van Riper on Wednesday, March 19, at 5:30 PM for a deep dive into the often-overlooked stories of Vineyard women in the Revolution. Discover how their courage shaped history and how, over the past 250 years, their stories have been remembered—or forgotten.
