Alice S. Wentworth: Last of the Vineyard Schooners
Alice S. Wentworth: Last of the Vineyard Schooners
Author and model shipwright Tom Lauria brings the story of the Alice S. Wentworth—the last great coasting schooner to call Martha’s Vineyard home—back to life.
For generations, schooners connected the Island to the mainland, carrying goods, news, and a sense of community. The Alice S. Wentworth, captained by the legendary Zeb Tilton, was the last working schooner in America’s coastwise trade. Her story reflects the grit, ingenuity, and independence that have shaped Island life for centuries.
Drawing from his new book, Alice S. Wentworth: The Schooner, Her People, and The Model, Tom shares his research into the vessel and the people who sailed her, alongside the meticulous process of creating a museum-quality model in her honor. A lifelong ship modeler, Tom began his craft at age seven in the Bronx, honed his skills at Mystic Seaport, and is an active member of the USS Constitution Model Shipwright Guild.
Join us to revisit the days when tall masts filled Vineyard Haven harbor, meet the personalities who kept the tradition alive, and see how one artist is preserving their legacy for future generations.
