Indigenous Knowledge Meets Shark Science with Steve Crawford
Indigenous Knowledge Meets Shark Science with Steve Crawford
This isn’t your typical shark talk. Researcher Steve Crawford takes a different approach, centering the voices and knowledge of Indigenous peoples and coastal communities—wisdom passed down for generations yet often absent from mainstream science.
Over five years and 130 interviews along the Northwest Atlantic—from the Florida Keys to Labrador, including Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket—Steve gathered ecological insights about white sharks that both complement and challenge current scientific understanding.
By bridging biological research with lived experience and cultural knowledge, Steve offers a rare perspective on shark behavior, ecology, and conservation. Join us on Saturday, August 30th for an eye-opening conversation that connects science with centuries of human connection to these remarkable animals.
BIO: Steve Crawford is a fish ecologist from Canada (University of Guelph in Ontario) who specializes in meaningful and reciprocal engagement between Indigenous, Local and Science knowledge holders in ecology and natural resource management. As Steve approaches retirement, he decided to close the circle on his career by returning to the creature that originally captivated his imagination as a young boy, and motivated him to become a marine biologist in the first place … the great, white, shark.
