A Captain and His Catboat: The Story of Tigress

A Captain and His Catboat: The Story of Tigress

Join Captain Kurt Peterson on Thursday, April 17th as he shares the story of his beloved wooden catboat, Tigress—a familiar sight in Vineyard waters, often recognized by her striking, hand-painted American flag sail.

A lifelong admirer of wooden boats and maritime history, Captain Kurt weaves together art, sailing, and storytelling in a way that brings the past to life. A 2009 graduate of Wheaton College with degrees in Art and Music, he has exhibited his work at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown. His vibrant, expressive art celebrates a time when sailing vessels powered American commerce and embodied the pride of coastal communities.

Tigress isn’t just a boat—she’s part of the Island’s enduring maritime heritage, with a tale all her own.
