Waterfront History: Oak Bluffs

Waterfront History: Oak Bluffs

Cottage City, now Oak Bluffs, was planned from the ground up as a summer resort: a tourist town dedicated to bringing off-Island visitors into contact with the sea, the sky, and the sun. Unique among the Island’s towns, its waterfront was designed for recreation: lined with hotels, boardwalks, pavilions, and bath houses. A look back to the days when “bathing costumes” were made of wool, and banned from the streets, reveals how much—and how little—the passage of a 150 years has changed summer on the Vineyard. Join MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper for a look at the Oak Bluffs waterfront, from East Chop to the Inkwell.
