The Making of an Island: With The MV Geological Society

The Making of an Island: With The MV Geological Society

Join us on Thursday, April 3, for a fascinating, hands-on panel discussion in partnership with the newly formed Martha’s Vineyard Geological Society (MVGS). Society members Bart Jarek, Bob Woodruff, and Bill Wilcox will explore the Island’s remarkable geological history and the ways it continues to shape life on Martha’s Vineyard today.

From clay cliffs and glacial erratics to shipwrecks and stone walls, Martha’s Vineyard’s landscape tells a story millions of years in the making. Using maps, anecdotes, and intriguing local specimens—including fossils, “magic sand,” and more—this casual talk will illuminate how geology has influenced not just the land, but also the Island’s art, history, and culture.

Founded in 2023, the MVGS is dedicated to exploring and preserving the Island’s geological, paleontological, and prehistoric treasures. In addition to organizing the annual National Fossil Day celebration each fall, the group leads year-round educational programming and community outreach.

This event marks the Society’s first official public program—come celebrate the wonders of our natural world and be part of their exciting debut!
