Lost Landmarks and Hidden Histories

Lost Landmarks and Hidden Histories with Bow Van Riper

A four-story hotel at the head of the Oak Bluffs steamer wharf . . . a horse-racing track near the current site of the high school  . . . a lifesaving station perched on the cliffs at Gay Head.  The history of the Vineyard is filled with once-iconic structures that now exist only in faded photographs. In this reprise of his popular talk this winter, join MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper for a look at the stories behind some of these lost landmarks: How they came to be, how they shaped life on the Island, and why they passed into history.

Preregistration encouraged.
