The Maritime Voice of Martha’s Vineyard: An E. Gale Huntington Tribute

The Maritime Voice of Martha’s Vineyard: An E. Gale Huntington Tribute

Gather ‘round for an evening of stories, songs, and celebration on Saturday, August 9, honoring E. Gale Huntington—founder, folklorist, historian, and cherished storyteller of Martha’s Vineyard’s maritime heritage. Best known for Songs the Whalemen Sang and The Gam, Gale also played a key role in early Vineyard archaeology and historical preservation.

At the heart of this event are three of Gale’s own violins, recently restored through the generosity of Dan Waters. Silent for decades, they will be played in public for the first time since Gale himself held them.

Island performers Mark Alan Lovewell—who was mentored by Gale and his wife Mildred—and his wife and musical partner Molly Conole will lead the concert. Together, they’ll share maritime songs and stories in Gale’s spirit and style.

Special guest Jim Richardson, Gale’s close friend and a respected archaeologist, will share personal reflections. “Most don’t realize it, but Gale’s excavations at the head of the Lagoon were instrumental in Bill Ritchie, the NY State archaeologist, excavating six sites here and, in 1969, publishing The Archaeology of Martha’s Vineyard,” he recalls. “Later, I excavated a further three sites here.”

Join us at Cooke House and Legacy Gardens in Edgartown as we celebrate the man who helped preserve the maritime soul of Martha’s Vineyard—with story, song, and the return of his own instruments to the stage.

MVM Members: $15; Non-Members: $25
