Mary Paiva Drouin Oral History

Mary Paiva Drouin | Dancing Dolls

Mary Paiva Drouin (1922-2006) was a chef, flower arranger, and daughter of a first-generation Portuguese immigrant family. In this clip from a 2002 interview, she describes the joy of the now-lost tradition of caroling from house to house in the Island’s Portuguese neighborhoods on Christmas Eve. She sings Portuguese songs and plays the “dancing dolls” that were all a part of this celebration.
