Spray on the Rails: The Improbable Story of the Martha’s Vineyard Railroad
Once there was a railroad on Martha’s Vineyard. It was built on dreams and sand, and it linked the steamer wharf in Oak Bluffs to the dunes at Katama. A locomotive, two coaches, and a baggage car shuttled along its nine miles of narrow-gauge track, for 22 summers: 1874 to 1895. It shouldn’t have worked at all, and yet somehow it did, becoming a beloved part of the Island’s original summer-resort boom. Join MVM Research Librarian Bow Van Riper for a look at the Island’s own “little engine that could.”
