In December 1891, after attending a six-week summer course at the Martha's Vineyard Summer Institute, physical education teacher James Naismith invented the game of basketball as a way to play indoors during the cold Massachusetts winters. Calder Martin is an artist and musician who moved from New York City to Martha's Vineyard in 2007, where he teaches mathematics at The Martha's Vineyard Public Charter School. In conjunction with the Museum's exhibit Those Who Served, join two local veterans to hear their stories of life during the war and in the years after. Herbert Foster served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 34th Infantry Regiment and 24th Infantry Division in Japan. Robert L. Falkenburg served as 1st Lt. in the 27th Infantry Regiment during WWII and the Korean War. The Museum exhibit will be open before the talk.
