Annual Ceremony of Remembrance at the Edgartown Lighthouse Children’s Memorial

[VINEYARD HAVEN, MA] – SEPTEMBER, 2025 – Martha’s Vineyard Museum invites the community to the 25th annual Ceremony of Remembrance at the Edgartown Lighthouse Children’s Memorial, on Saturday, September 13 at 1:00 PM (with a rain date scheduled for September 27).

Since its creation in 2001, the memorial, carefully stewarded by the Museum, has offered a place of quiet reflection for families honoring children who left us too soon. Each engraved granite cobblestone, set in a foundation that echoes the rhythm of the waves, stands as a lasting tribute.

Each September, loved ones gather on the lighthouse terrace to remember together. Families place seashells, flowers, or other tokens at their child’s stone while soft music and poetry create a space for connection and comfort.

“We’re honored to serve as stewards of both this lighthouse and the memorial,” said Heather Seger, the Museum’s executive director. “For families who return year after year, this ceremony is more than tradition. It is a source of community and healing during the hardest of times.”
