The Two Worlds of Denys Wortman
Denys Wortman lived and worked between two worlds: New York City and Martha’s Vineyard. From 1924 to 1954, he created Metropolitan Movies, a daily newspaper cartoon that captured the humor and challenges of everyday life in the city. Working at a remarkable pace—six a week for nearly thirty years—Wortman created more than 8,000 cartoons that were nationally syndicated and seen by millions of readers.
The Two Worlds of Denys Wortman explores the two places that shaped his life and work: New York, where he built his career as a celebrated cartoonist, and Martha’s Vineyard, where he lived and worked from 1941 until his death in 1958. From his Island home, Wortman continued to mail his drawings to New York each week, keeping one foot in the city while finding new subjects and inspiration on the Vineyard.
Presented with the help of his son, Denys Wortman, the exhibition brings together original cartoons, paintings, photographs, objects, and archival materials. Together, they reveal an artist whose eye for ordinary life remains strikingly familiar nearly a century later.
