Colin Ruel: The Light is Returning
This deeply personal exhibition juxtaposes two lives: That of the artist’s grandfather, Menemsha fisherman and folk artist Jimmy Morgan, and that of the artist himself, raising children in the same Island community under radically altered economic conditions. Its eclectic mixture of artwork, artifacts, images, light, and sound invites visitors to reflect on how life in a small coastal town–sustained for generations by shared labor, community, and a sense of belonging–has been fractured and destabilized in the space of only two generations. This exhibition is the story of one family, and one small village, but it is also the story of the Island itself over the last fifty years.
