Colin Ruel: The Light is Returning

Colin Ruel: The Light is Returning

The Light is Returning is a deeply personal exhibition exploring the fracture of a coastal community through the juxtaposition of two lives: the artist’s grandfather – a fisherman, folk artist, and embodied product of place – and the artist himself, raising children in the same landscape under radically altered economic conditions. At its heart, the work mourns the breaking of a generational cycle once sustained by labor, community, and belonging that is now destabilized by wealth inequity, displacement, and the commodification of place.

Through artwork, archival materials, sound, and installation, this exhibition navigates the tension between continuity and fracture – between a world where tradition was earned through endurance and one that now requires capital.
