The Wampanoag People have been here for over 10,000 years. English colonization, which began in 1642, took less than a century to end Wampanoag sovereignty over most of the Island, creating three towns and a county government by 1700. By 1900, Dukes County consisted of seven towns: six on the Vineyard and one on the Elizabeth Islands. How did that happen, and what have 250 years of division and unification in Dukes County meant for the people who live here? Join Tribal representatives Julie Vanderhoop and Brad Lopes, Museum historian Bow Van Riper, and Dukes County Commissioners for a surprising look at “how we go to where we are.”
