Wampanoag Sovereignty, Relationality, and Responsibility
Wampanoag Sovereignty, Relationality, and Responsibility
What is Tribal sovereignty? What relationships and responsibilities does the United States government have toward Tribal Nations?
In this online lecture, Brad Lopes (Aquinnah Wampanoag), Education and Public Program Manager at the Aquinnah Cultural Center, explores these questions and how they have evolved over time. Through key historical moments, he examines how U.S. legal and military structures have shaped—and often challenged—Tribal sovereignty.
The talk also considers how Wampanoag sovereignty has been undermined, alongside the community’s ongoing resistance and persistence, often described as survivance.
