The Kate Cory: A Civil War Sea Story for Martha’s Vineyard

The Kate Cory: A Civil War Sea Story for Martha’s Vineyard

Master ship modeler Tom Lauria brings to life the remarkable story of the Kate Cory, a 19th-century whaling vessel connected to the same seafaring world that shaped Martha’s Vineyard.

Built in 1856, the Kate Cory sailed across the Atlantic and Pacific during the height of the whaling era before being captured in 1863 by the Confederate raider CSS Alabama. Converted into a prisoner vessel and ultimately burned at sea, her story reflects a moment when global conflict reached far beyond the battlefield.

Blending craftsmanship and historical insight, Lauria offers an engaging look at a ship—and a way of life—deeply connected to the Island’s maritime past.
