Screening and Talk: The Hunt for Good Americans
Screening and Talk: The Hunt for Good Americans
Join the Museum for a special screening and conversation with Island filmmaker Victoria Campbell, who will present The Hunt for Good Americans, an adventurous, playful, and deeply curious road film she created with collaborator Abby Pope.
In the fall of 2009, armed with just $2,000, a battered station wagon, and a desire to understand what America really felt like, the pair set out on a cross-country journey from California to the East Coast. Using paper maps, intuition, and two notebooks that became a script written on the fly, they transformed chance encounters into performances—casting strangers as “good Americans” through thrift-store costumes and improvised scenes.
Blending documentary and fable, the film unfolds as a whimsical, Alice-in-Wonderland–style narrative, filled with surprising cameos, a soundtrack composed entirely by hometown friends, and landscapes that capture the country just before the smartphone era. Following the screening, Campbell will discuss the making of the film, life on the road, and how curiosity and spontaneity shaped their storytelling.
