Telegraphs, Tunnels, and Trouble: Adventures in Chappaquiddick Infrastructure, 1800–1938

Telegraphs, Tunnels, and Trouble: Adventures in Chappaquiddick Infrastructure, 1800–1938

Long before ferries and modern conveniences, Chappaquiddick was already grappling with a persistent question: how do you stay connected to the world when the water keeps getting in the way?

Join Island historian and educator Chris Baer for a fascinating look at the bold, inventive—and sometimes wildly impractical—efforts to link Chappaquiddick with Martha’s Vineyard and beyond. From bridge proposals and imagined tunnels beneath the harbor to canals, telegraph lines, and other ambitious schemes, this lively program explores the engineers, dreamers, skeptics, and Islanders who shaped these ideas. Blending historical insight with storytelling, Chris Baer brings to life a lesser-known chapter of Island history where ingenuity was constant and “getting there” was always part of the story.

Please note: We regret that the historic Cooke House is not ADA-compliant and cannot accommodate mobility aids. This program is presented in historical costume from a modern perspective.
