The Rise and Fall of a Whaling Town

The Rise and Fall of a Whaling Town

Join historian and master ship model maker Tom Lauria for an exploration of how the fortunes, identity, and character of a community can rise and fall alongside a single industry. Through the lens of the whaling era, Tom examines the dangers of life at sea, the ambition and risk that drove whaling ventures, and the lasting impact the industry had on coastal towns like those on Martha’s Vineyard. Rich with maritime history and human drama, this program reflects on what happens when an entire way of life is left behind.

Please note: We regret that the historic Cooke House is not ADA-compliant and cannot accommodate mobility aids. This program is presented in historical costume from a modern perspective.
