Separated Island: Isolation & Independence on Chappaquiddick

Separated Island: Isolation & Independence on Chappaquiddick

“Chappaquiddick” means “the separated island,” and separation has long defined its relationship with the rest of Martha’s Vineyard. Although part of Edgartown since the earliest years of English settlement, Chappaquiddick has always maintained a distinct identity of its own. On the 100th anniversary of Chappaquiddick’s unsuccessful bid to become a separate town, join MVM Research Librarian Bow Van Riper for a lively look at court battles, swimming cows, bathing beaches, unbuilt bridges, and the Island’s loneliest lighthouse.

Please note: We regret that the historic Cooke House is not ADA-compliant and cannot accommodate mobility aids. This program is presented in historical costume from a modern perspective.

MVM Members: $15; Non-Members: $25
