Tales from the Grave: Curious Burial Places of Martha’s Vineyard

Tales from the Grave: Curious Burial Places of Martha’s Vineyard

Each October, Island historian and educator Chris Baer invites us to explore a darker, stranger, and more mysterious side of Martha’s Vineyard history.

This year, Baer turns his attention to the Island’s burial places. Roughly half of the Vineyard’s 19th-century dead may lie in unmarked graves; many were buried outside known cemeteries. Whole graveyards have disappeared, while others have been rediscovered. Who lies beneath our feet?

Using historic photographs and images, Baer will uncover the histories of these places and the people laid to rest there, offering a glimpse into a lesser-explored side of the Vineyard’s past.

Come early for a pre-talk mingle at 4pm in the First Light Café.
