Stone Carving Demonstration by Chris Pellettieri
October 1 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Join us in welcoming Chris Pellettieri, traditional stone carver and founder of Pellettieri Stone Carvers’ Academy, as he sets up a workshop at MVM where visitors can watch him at work, ask questions, and even try their hand at using a few simple hand tools to chip away at a block of stone.
The art of stone carving has been practiced for thousands of years, leading to some of the most enduring achievements of all time: The Great Pyramids, the Parthenon, the cathedrals of Europe – even our own Island cemeteries. Yet few people today have any idea of what traditional stone carving is, what the tools look like, or how they are used to transform stone. Chris will be with us all day Saturday sharing the tradition and stories of his apprenticeship at the Cathedral of St. John The Divine in Manhattan in the late 1980s, as well as some of the commissions he has done and training programs he has run in the decades since.
Free with museum admission.
