Shenandoah II: Designing the Next Generation

Shenandoah II: Designing the Next Generation

Join us at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum for another program in the MV Ocean Academy Lecture Series. No prior attendance required.

This talk looks ahead to the design and development of Shenandoah II, a steel-hulled topsail schooner inspired by Captain Bob Douglas’ original vision. Created to carry that legacy forward, the new vessel is being developed to meet modern U.S. Coast Guard standards, supporting extended educational voyages for Island students and aspiring sailors.

Naval architects Sam Howell and Thomas Degremont will share how they are shaping this next chapter, balancing tradition with innovation and translating the spirit of the original vessel into a design built for today.

For anyone who has watched the Shenandoah under sail, stepped aboard, or simply felt her presence in Vineyard Haven Harbor, this is a chance to understand what comes next—and how a new generation will continue to learn from the sea.

MVM Members: $15; Non-Members: $25
