Seaweed & Summer People: The History of a Victorian Pastime
Seaweed & Summer People: The History of a Victorian Pastime
Seaweed had long been a nuisance to fishermen and a boon to farmers, but in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became a subject of fascination among the middle-class visitors who drove the Vineyard’s emerging tourist economy. There were seaweed shops, seaweed albums, seaweed art, and dishes decorated with seaweed-based design. The seaweed craze combined arts and crafts, natural history collecting, and the Victorian mania for “self-improvement” into a satisfying summer pastime. Join MVM Research Librarian Bow Van Riper for walk through this long-vanished fad and a look at its larger cultural significance.
