The Wooly History of Martha’s Vineyard: Raising Sheep for Fun (?) and Profit
The Wooly History of Martha’s Vineyard: Raising Sheep for Fun (?) and Profit
Turning a profit on sheep in the preindustrial world required far more than letting a flock roam free. This session looks closely at the labor, skills, and ingenuity required to raise sheep for wool, meat, milk, and household use on Martha’s Vineyard.
Led primarily by Norah Van Riper, this talk explores how Island families relied on their flocks for both comfort and income—and what it really took to make sheep farming work in a demanding coastal environment.
