Listen, My Children: Vineyard Legends of the Revolutionary War
Listen, My Children: Vineyard Legends of the Revolutionary War
Join MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper a look at how the stories of Josie’s pig, Mrs. Swasey’s buried silver, and Captain Smith’s phantom regiment reflect the ways we remember history.
Every war generates its own legends: stirring stories of heroism, villainy, stalwart resistance, and improvisation in the face of crisis. Some are stories of actual events that never made it into the history books, perhaps “improved” in generations of retellings. Others seem to have been made up, long after the fact, out of thin air. Legends of the Vineyard during the Revolution center on the courage, resolution, and ingenuity of Islanders in the face of British threats, celebrating—on a small scale—the virtues that enabled the Thirteen Colonies to win Independence.
