Juneteenth: A National Story, An Island Perspective

Juneteenth: A National Story, An Island Perspective

Join us for a thoughtful conversation on the history of Juneteenth, led by Shawn Ramoutar, President of the NAACP Martha’s Vineyard Chapter, and Dr. Elaine Weintraub, historian, educator, and co-founder of the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard.

This program looks directly at what Juneteenth marks: the delayed arrival of freedom in 1865 and the long, uneven path that followed. Rather than celebration alone, it invites us to sit with the reality of that history—what was promised, what was withheld, and what has endured.

Grounded in both national history and the lived history of Martha’s Vineyard, the conversation reflects on stories often left out and why remembering them matters. This is an invitation to listen, learn, and engage with the past as it is.

Arrive early—join us at 4pm in the First Light Café for drinks & light bites.
