In Harm’s Way: Martha’s Vineyard and the War at Sea
Join MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper for a fast-paced look at Vineyarders on the high seas during the Revolution.
“Give me a fast ship,” John Paul Jones declared, “for I intend to go in harm’s way.” That spirit has animated the US Navy since it was established in October 1775, but even before its birth, Vineyarders were exemplifying that spirit. Members of the local militia used armed whaleboats to seize British vessels in the sound. Experienced sailors signed onto privateers—armed vessels licensed by the states, or the Continental Congress—and roamed the Atlantic in search of British shipping. Thomas Chase and four shipmates from Holmes Hole fought with Jones’ squadron at the Battle of Flamborough Head, when the Bonhomme Richard dueled the Serapis, and Jones declared: “I have not yet begun to fight!”
