SOLD OUT – History Unfolded: A Living Landmark – the Story of Shearer Cottage
August 31 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
In conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition Tomorrow’s History: 175 Years of the Vineyard Gazette, this program series takes a deep dive into some of the Island’s most compelling stories. Join Museum colleagues and friends as they explore a different topic each week, offering deeper insight into our Island’s rich history.
Charles and his wife Henrietta opened Shearer Cottage in Oak Bluffs in 1912, one of the first on the Island to welcome African American guests. It became a favorite retreat of celebrities and an anchor for the town’s growing black summer community. Join Lee Jackson Van Allen, a member of the family that still owns and operates Shearer Cottage, who will share the history of the Inn and the extraordinary Shearer family.
This talk will take place outside in Doherty Hall at MVM. Masks are not required outdoors, but are still strongly recommended.
Lee’s first talk on August 31st is sold out. Lee will give the same talk on September 3rd. Purchase tickets for September here.
