Honoring Janet Messineo: A Legacy of Surfcasting and Community

Honoring Janet Messineo: A Legacy of Surfcasting and Community

This fall, the Museum joins the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby in celebrating eight decades of fishing, community, and Island tradition. Through this special lecture series, hear directly from those who have lived the Derby—seasoned anglers sharing stories, memories, and the enduring connections forged along Vineyard shores.

Join us for a special evening celebrating the life and legacy of Janet Messineo, a pioneering figure in the Martha’s Vineyard fishing community. For over 50 years, Janet was a dedicated participant in the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, earning a place in the Derby Hall of Fame in 2005. Beyond her impressive fishing skills, she was also the Island’s only taxidermist for many decades, known for her traditional skin-mount techniques . Her memoir, Casting into the Light, published in 2019, offers a window into her life and passion for fishing.

This evening will feature reflections from longtime Derby participants and friends, sharing stories that honor Janet’s extraordinary contributions and the lasting impact she has had on the Vineyard fishing community. Her dedication, kindness, and pioneering spirit continue to inspire anglers and community members alike.
