Ed and Steve Amaral: Brothers on the Vineyard Waters

Ed and Steve Amaral: Brothers on the Vineyard Waters

This fall, the Museum joins the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby in celebrating eight decades of fishing, community, and Island tradition. Through this special lecture series, hear directly from those who have lived the Derby—seasoned anglers sharing stories, memories, and the enduring connections forged along Vineyard shores.

This evening, join longtime fishing brothers Ed and Steve Amaral as they share stories from decades on the Vineyard’s waters. Growing up in Oak Bluffs, the Amarals have been part of the Derby community for generations, with Ed known for his meticulous tackle techniques and Steve celebrated for landing some of the Derby’s most memorable striped bass.

Beyond their catches, the brothers have been fixtures in the local fishing scene, mentoring younger anglers and helping preserve the traditions that make the Derby a cherished Island institution. Their talk offers a firsthand look at the Derby’s enduring impact on the community, along with the humor, camaraderie, and life lessons that come from years spent on Vineyard waters.
