Culture Strike: A Discussion with Laura Raicovich
August 12 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Join long-time Chilmark visitor, author, and former director of the Queens Museum, Laura Raicovich for a discussion around the role of cultural institutions in an age of protest. As Director of the Queens Museum, Raicovich helped turn a municipal institution into a public common for art and activism, organizing high-powered exhibitions that doubled as political protests. This discussion, organized by artist Marion Wilson, will be held on 100 Lagoon Pond, a houseboat she transformed into a studio and project space in Lagoon Pond. It will kick off a collaborative project between Wilson, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and the local shellfishing community that will culminate in an exhibition at the Museum in February in 2023. The houseboat, moored just across the street from the Museum, offers a unique lens through which to view both the Lagoon and the challenges it faces.
Copies of Laura’s book “Culture Strike: Art and Museums in the Age of Protest” will be available to purchase courtesy of Bunch of Grapes.
This event is free to the public thanks to a grant from the Martha’s Vineyard Local Cultural Council.
Pre-registration is required and this event is sold out. Thank you for your interest!
