Club Women: Sociability and Social Change on the Vineyard, 1880-1920

Club Women: Sociability and Social Change on the Vineyard, 1880-1920

Barred from voting and holding public office, discouraged from pursuing higher education and professional credentials, Vineyard women still found ways to change the world. Purely local groups like the Want-to-Know Club and the Triad Club, as well as local chapters of national organizations like the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union provided a social outlet for Vineyard women, but there was more to them than tea, cookies, and conversation. They championed a wide range of Progressive-Era causes, including prohibition, education, improved health care, and civic education.  Join MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper for a look at how Vineyard women used “soft power” to change the world.
