Alice S. Wentworth: The Last Great Vineyard Schooner – An Encore Presentation

Alice S. Wentworth: The Last Great Vineyard Schooner – An Encore Presentation

Join us for a richly illustrated online maritime history talk exploring the story of the Alice S. Wentworth, the last great coasting schooner to call Martha’s Vineyard home. Presented by author and master model shipwright Tom Lauria, this visual presentation is based on his book Alice S. Wentworth: The Schooner, Her People, and the Model.

For generations, schooners were the lifeblood of Island communities, carrying goods, news, and vital connections between Martha’s Vineyard and the mainland. Captained by legendary Vineyard mariner Zeb Tilton, the Alice S. Wentworth became the final working schooner in America’s coastwise trade—a vessel that came to symbolize Vineyard resilience, independence, and ingenuity.

Through historic photographs, original research, and close-up views of his extraordinary scale model, Tom brings the schooner and her people vividly to life. He shares the stories of the sailors who worked her decks alongside insights into the meticulous process of building a museum-quality model that honors their craft and legacy. Drawing on a lifetime devoted to ship modeling—shaped by mentorship at Mystic Seaport and years with the USS Constitution Model Shipwright Guild—Tom offers a rare and personal perspective on preserving maritime history.

From the comfort of your home, revisit a time when tall masts lined Vineyard Haven Harbor and discover how one artist is ensuring this remarkable story endures for generations.
