Biography/Historical Note

David Bethune Holdsworth was born in Nutley, New Jersey, June 5, 1922 to Captain Hugh Reginald Holdsworth and Dorothy Ann Frances Bethune Holdsworth of Halifax, Yorkshire, England. After graduating from the Royal Navy College, Dartmouth, England, David became flag lieutenant to Admiral Sir Henry Moore, head of the British joint services mission in Washington, D. C. On September 17, 1948, Lieutenant Holdsworth married Lorraine "Ray" Graham Bacon. The couple had three children: Lindsay, Kim, and David. In 1957, David was promoted to the rank of Commander. David B. Holdsworth died in 1977 and was buried in Abel's Hill Cemetery in Chilmark, Massachusetts.

Lorraine "Ray" Graham Bacon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 25, 1926 to Commander Edward Bacon and Lorraine Graham Bacon. Ray graduated from Mount Vernon College and George Washington University. Her parents owned a home, Greystone, on Middle Road in Chilmark, Massachusetts. David and Ray Holdsworth summered on Martha's Vineyard together from 1950 until David's death in 1977. Ray continued to be a seasonal resident of Chilmark until 2000. Lorraine "Ray" Holdsworth died April 11, 2009 in McLean, Virginia, but was buried at Abel's Hill Cemetery in Chilmark.

The collection contains bills and receipts belonging to David and Lorraine Holdsworth of Chilmark, Massachusetts, from 1957-1980. Most of the bills and receipts are for local businesses on Martha's Vineyard.
