Biography/Historical Note
The Vineyard News was started by Harleigh Bridges Schultz in Tisbury (Vineyard Haven), Massachusetts in 1919. Schultz had previously worked for Hearst publications, including the Boston American newspaper, a daily tabloid. He moved to Vineyard Haven soon after the conclusion of World War I. Schultz's Vineyard News newspaper covered local stories and events in all of the island towns. The paper did not have its own presses and was sent out for printing. The final issue of August 19, 1920, has a front page headline; "Mr. HB Hough Buys The News." The new editor and publisher of the Vineyard Gazette, Henry Beetle Hough, bought The Vineyard News, as well as, the Martha's Vineyard Herald of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts; establishing the Vineyard Gazette as the principal island newspaper. Harleigh Schultz changed careers, becoming a principal and teacher at the West Tisbury Academy. However, Schultz kept one foot in the publishing business; he and his wife, Natalie Schultz, produced The Vineyard Magazine from 1924-1925. Harleigh Schultz worked at the Academy until he left the island in 1925.
