Biography/Historical Note

Theodore (Ted) Carl Meinelt was born on July 15, 1916 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He lived there until he graduated from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and moved to Martha's Vineyard in 1938 when he was hired as an art teacher for the Tisbury School in Vineyard Haven by Henry Ritter, with whom he became life long friends. There he began his long time relationship with the Vineyard and its people. He quickly became involved with community groups such as the Grace Episcopal Church and the Art Worker's Guild.

He was drafted into the army in 1941, but returned to his teaching position on the Vineyard soon after he was discharged. It was then that Theodore Meinelt and Mary (Polly) were married in 1950. Polly traced her family history deep in Martha's Vineyard, descending from Mayhews, Whitings, Adams, and Hillmans. She was living with her father, Harold Mayhew, and teaching home economics in Vineyard schools when they were married. After Harold Mayhew's death, they moved into "The Old House" on South Road. There they became active in the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club, Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society, and the Martha's Vineyard Museum. Ted continued to be the Martha's Vineyard art teacher, traveling from town to town holding the responsibilities of art instructor at each local school. In 1959, they moved off island to Topsfield, MA outside of Boston, due to concern that the Island was too sheltered. Ted and Polly spent 17 years there where Ted was the art department chairman for the Masconomet Regional School District. Upon his retirement, Ted and Polly returned to the Vineyard and once again became involved in the community. Both became active in the Chilmark Cultural Council, Antiques Club, and Doll club, and returned to the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club. They were also famous for their personal collections of oddities and artifacts from the Vineyard's past and their extensive historical knowledge of Martha's Vineyard.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains materials accumulated and created by Theodore (Ted) and Mary (Polly) Meinelt during their time as active community members on Martha's Vineyard. Predominately, the materials include newspaper clippings, photographs, art work, and legal documents used in local history exhibits that Ted and Polly created for community events such as the Chilmark Tricentennial Celebration. The collection also contains personal papers, photographs, artwork, and genealogical research materials. Sheets of permalife paper have been inserted to represent the original grouping where metal fasteners were removed for preservation reasons.

Some of the personal, family, and genealogical materials may have been used as local history exhibit materials as well.
