Biography/Historical Note

The McDonough family was brought to Martha's Vineyard when the Irishman John Pierce McDonough and his wife Annie moved to the U.S. from Ireland. John Pierce McDonough began his career at the U.S. Marine Hospital and later went on to open his own service station on Beach Road. He had many children including Marshall, Percival, and Kathleen. Marshall went on to join the service, Percival inherited the service station, and Kathleen became a prominent member of the Vineyard community as a notary. Descendents of John Pierce McDonough still reside on Martha's Vineyard today including Martha Sullivan.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection is comprised of photo albums of the McDonough family that were compiled by Kathleen McDonough, receipts which were perdominately concerning John Pierce's finainces, a journal from John Pierce's time at the U.S. Marine Hopsital, an award given by the National War Salvage Program and correspondence between Marshall McDonough and his mother, Annie. The photography albums include labels and annotations created by Kathleen.
