Biography/Historical Note

Joseph Mayhew was born on September 30, 1791, in Edgartown, Massachusetts, to William Mayhew (1748-1840) and Lucy (Mayhew) Mayhew (1753-before 1798). Joseph had eight siblings: Phebe (1775- ), Lucy (1778-1794), William Manning (1781-1800), Thomas (1784- ), Jonathan (1787- ), Joseph (1791- ), Lucy (1794- ), and Rebecca (1797); and four half siblings: Hannah Kelley (1799- ), William Manning (1800), Eliza Ann (1804- ), and Ephraim Pease (1806- ). He was a merchant in Edgartown.

In 1812, Joseph married Nancy Worth (1793-1883) and the pair had six children: Charles (1825-1910), Eliza (1829-1889), Nancy (1831-1871), Mary W. (1833-1895), William (1836- ), and Henry H. (1838- ). Joseph Mayhew died on August 4, 1874, in Edgartown, Massachusetts.
