AbstractAgnes Littlefield Smith was born in Tisbury, Massachusetts, and spent her life on Martha’s Vineyard. From 1887-1897 Smith kept a scrapbook of local events and writings.

Biography/Historical Note

Agnes Littlefield Smith was born in Tisbury, Massachusetts, on June 23, 1873 to Jane K. Mayhew and Hosiah Mayhew Smith. In 1893, Agnes married Herbert C. Hancock (1870- ), a carpenter and resident of Chilmark, Massachusetts. They had two children: Hariph Clayton and Esther Redfied. Agnes Littlefield Smith died on August 1, 1954.

Scope and Content Note

Smith’s scrapbook contains newspaper clippings of local interest including a murder trial, news of local ships in the arctic, and announcements of marriages and deaths. There are also writings she found of interest including poetry, essays, and jokes. Also included are several sermons by Dr. Talmage.
