Biography/Historical Note
Little League Baseball was founded by Carl Stotz in 1938 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Stotz's goal was to provide young boys the opportunity to play baseball as though they were professionals. In 1947 the first Little League outside of Pennsylvania began in Hammonton, New Jersey, and by 1952 more than 1,500 programs were active in the country. The Martha’s Vineyard Little League program was started by a group of men from the Martha’s Vineyard Legion Post 9261, VFW, headed by Richard Blankenship in 1952. The league was open to Martha’s Vineyard boys ages 8-12. In the first year there were 6 teams, each sponsored by one of the following towns or organizations: Town of Tisbury, Edgartown Boys Club, Holy Name Society, MV Post 9261 VFW, Oak Bluffs Business Bureau, and Chilmark Grange. The first Little League game was played on June 8, 1952 at Petaluma Park, Oak Bluffs.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of a scrapbook with articles and photographs gathered between 1952 and 1955. The articles cover the gathering interest in the program, try outs, and first games. There are team photos with coaches and umpires.
