Acquisition Information
5 record books (four titled "Secretary's Book" and one titled "Prize Essays") were the gift of the Hon. Beriah T. Hillman in June 1923 (Accession no. 1923.073). The immediate source of acquisition and date of accession for the rest of the material is unknown.

Biography/Historical Note
The first meeting of the Dukes County Educational Association was held at the Methodist Church in Holmes Hole, Massachusetts, on September 15, 1848, after the Massachusetts State Legislature passed an act granting aid to "County Associations of Teachers and others." The object of the Association, according to its constitution, was to "promote the interests of common schools." At the first meeting, the following officers were elected: President - the Hon. Leavitt Thaxter; Vice Presidents - Capt. William Daggett, Mr. Jonathan Mayhew, and Rev. William W. Hall; Secretary - Hebron Vincent; and Treasurer - Dea. Nathan Mayhew. The last recorded annual meeting of the Dukes County Educational Association was held on October 29, 1902.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the organizational records of the Dukes County Educational Association, including reports, minutes, memoranda, letters, essays, and resolutions. Also included in the collection are the Association's constitution and bylaws as well as four record books, titled "Secretary's Book," with reports, minutes, and notes about the Association's members.
