AbstractThe collection includes letters, receipts, legal documents, a deed, and a warrant relating to various family members of Daniel F. Worth (1822-1922?). Of note is John Dunham's material, dating 1859-1872, relating to his duties as postmaster of the Chilmark Post Office. John Dunham was Daniel F. Worth's wife's maternal grandfather.

Gift of Mrs. Daniel F. Worth in November 1968 (Accession no. 1968.026).

Custodial History

The material in this collection was donated by Mrs. Daniel F. Worth, daughter-in-law of Captain Daniel F. Worth and Nettie Smith (Bassett) Worth. Mrs. Worth noted that she was donating the collection in honor of her late husband, Daniel F. Worth, and also "in loving memory of a remarkable woman, Nettie Smith Bassett Worth, who with great effort, took care and cherished these things of her family and the island."

Biography/Historical Note

Daniel F. Worth was born in 1829 to Henry Pease Worth (1794-1878) and Mercy (Banning) Worth (1794-1861). Daniel was a mariner and eventually earned the rank of captain. In 1852 Daniel married Jane West Harding (1835-1896). The couple had one son, Charles L. After Jane's death Daniel married Nettie Smith Bassett (1879-1940) in 1897. The couple had two sons: Thomas F. and Daniel F., Jr. (1899-1955). Nettie Smith (Bassett) Worth was the daughter of Joseph T. Bassett (1837- ) and Mary L. Dunham (1840- ), granddaughter of Captain Nathan Stewart Bassett (1796-1868) and Deborah Mayhew (Tilton) Bassett (1807-1899), and granddaughter of John Dunham (1817-1893) and Nancy S. (Mayhew) Dunham (1812-1887). Captain Daniel F. Worth died around 1922.

This collection consists of material collected by Captain Daniel F. Worth and his wife Nettie Smith (Bassett) Worth. There are letters, receipts, legal documents, a deed, and a warrant relating to various family members including Nathan S. Bassett, Elisha Dunham, John Dunham, Philip S. Mayhew, and Captain Daniel F. Worth. John Dunham's material, dating 1859-1872, primarily relates to his duties as postmaster of the Chilmark Post Office. The collection also includes Phebe S. Cleveland's autograph book.
