Biography/Historical Note

Benjamin Luce was born in Edgartown, Massachusetts, on September 8, 1808 to Silas Luce (1779-1854) and Hannah (Norton) Luce (1774-1857). Benjamin had four siblings: Henry (1809-1850), Stephen (1811-1852), Ichabod Norton (1814-1894), and Joanna (1817-). On April 1, 1859, Benjamin married Dency (Look) Claghorn (1816-1905), the widow of Shubael Norton Claghorn (1812-). The couple lived in Edgartown. Benjamin was involved in the sale of goods, shipping, and politics. Benjamin Luce died on February 16, 1883.

Scope and Content Note

The collection includes letters written by and sent to Benjamin Luce (1808-1883) of Edgartown, Massachusetts. Most of the correspondence is between Benjamin and his brothers, Henry, Ichabod Norton, and Stephen, concerning every day activities, family matters, and business ventures among other things. There are also letters to and from various other family members, friends, and business contacts. There is one receipt issued by Edmund Bradley to Benjamin Luce for flour.
