Biography/Historical Note
John Gale Alden (1844-1962) was a well-known naval architect, yacht designer and yacht broker. Alden founded his office in 1909. Although he designed a variety of vessels, his offshore racing schooners were particularly popular. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Alden's office was on State Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts based Alden Design office closed in 2008.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains three blueprints of an auxiliary sloop designed by John G. Alden, naval architect, 131 State Street, Boston, Mass. The sloop belonged to the "Barnacle Class," and is Alden Design number 709. Blueprints include: Sail Plan for 34'-0" Auxiliary Sloop, (scale 1/2"=1'), 1940 January 04, 1 technical drawing, 77 x 66 cm.; Cabin Plan for 34 Ft. Auxiliary Sloop, (scale 1"=1'), 1940 January 05, 1 technical drawing, 60 x 109 cm.; and 34 Ft. Aux. Sloop Deck Construction Plan, (scale 1"=1'), 1940 April 07, 1 technical drawing, 35 x 104 cm. The collection also includes a 1941 advertising brochure titled, "The Barnacle."
