Gift of Jack F. Cage Jr in 2002. (Accession no. 2002.052). Cage aquired this collection from the attic of a house on South Main Street, Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts.

Biography/Historical Note

Norman Johnson was born in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, on May 7, 1856 to Henry C. Johnson and Annie J. Cathcart Johnson. Johnson would later move to Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, and in 1884 he married Cynthia S. Flanders. The couple had no children. Johnson was a builder on Martha's Vineyard from the late 19th century into the early 20th century, and dealt with various New England merchants to procure building materials. He was also the master of the Martha's Vineyard Masonic Lodge from 1914-1915. Norman Johnson died on August 15, 1923, at 67 years old.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains material from Norman Johnson's Vineyard Haven construction business from 1891-1915. It includes receipts, business records, account books, correspondence, time sheets, and bank records. Many of the business records involve the Tilton Family's building supply company in Vineyard Haven. The collection also contains material from Johnson's personal life on Martha's Vineyard, including bills, tax documents, and town permits.
